Dr. Maria Montessori, the first woman to graduate from the University of Rome Medical School, became interested in education.

Montessori education came to the U.S. in 1912, with one of the early schools established by Alexander Graham Bell.

The Montessori system has been used successfully with children between the ages of two and a half and eighteen.

Children are free to move about the classroom at will, to talk to and work with other children.

The teacher works with individual children or with children in small groups introduces materials.

Observers have described children educated according to the Montessori system as being self-disciplined.

Most children adjust readily to new classroom situations.

Children are grouped in mixed ages and abilities in three to six year spans.

There are no papers turned back with red marks and corrections.
